I was disappointed that the original story had been altered in order to make a classic politically correct. Shame on the author!
I am so dissapointed. This book has "Fee Fi Fo Fum" but no "I smell the blood of an Englishman.
My daughter is 6-LOVES Jack and the Beanstalk-BUT this was not her favorite version due to the illustrations. The story is good-slightly different spin in that the wife is a human and doesn't really care for her Ogre husband.
The illustrations make this book worthy of any collection. While the story is slightly different from the version I always read as a child, it's hardly noticeable with such beautiful pictures that draw in the reader.
Wow this was a home run. My daughter is 2 1/2 and just recently into fairy tales.
Whenever I choose a fairy tale book for my preschooler, I go by two criteria - one, that the story remains recognizable in its essence (to the original) ,and two, that the illustrations have to be impressive, with lots of color, and details. This retelling of Jack and the Beanstalk fulfills both criteria.
A classic tale beautifully retold and incredibly illustrated. I have purchased a number of books to welcome a new baby and/or to celebrate a child's birthday.
These watercolor illustrations make me smile, they're so vivid! For a contemporary take on an old tale, this one might be my favorite.
Some odd changes are made to the traditional story.
Q was a little afraid of this book and kept asking me to read faster.
Nice illustrations--but I really didn't like the giant sniffing the air and bellowing, "Fee Fi Fo Fum, I smell a visitor, yum, yum, yum". How can you read Jack and the Beanstalk without "Fee Fi Fo Fum, I smell the blood of an englishman!
A milder, gentler retelling with no bone-eating or dead giant.
